The waterproof cast is a lie

May 3

As a consolation prize for having to get another fiberglass cast for three more weeks than I had expected, my doctor offered me the so-called waterproof version. The difference between it and the regular kind is the gauze underneath. Oh, and no cloth sock before the gauze goes on. This new gauze looks like a synthetic fiber. The nurse who applied it said that they had trial tested/submerged the stuff and the water literally all drained out.

Well, I did my own little test today, and I hate to say it but…. it’s still dripping! And we are going to dinner with friends. I’ll probably leave a little puddle on their carpet where I sit. /sigh

The problem probably is the 90degree angle of the ankle to foot = easy place for water to get trapped. So, fyi – the waterproof cast is a lie!

  • "Love anything and your heart will be wrung and possibly broken. If you want to make sure of keeping it intact you must give it to no one, not even an animal. Wrap it carefully round with hobbies and little luxuries; avoid all entanglements. Lock it up safe in the casket or coffin of your selfishness. But in that casket, safe, dark, motionless, airless, it will change. It will not be broken; it will become unbreakable, impenetrable, irredeemable. To love is to be vulnerable." — C.S. Lewis
