100 Best Books for Women

March 25

Inspired by this 100 greatest books for men list, a group for women called Chicks on Lit over at Goodreads is asking it’s members: what book would you include in a similar list for women.

Here are the criteria:

  • Book that shaped the lives of WOMEN while helping to define broader cultural ideas of what it means to be a woman.
  • Book that has shaped our (women’s) perspective on politics, religion, money, love, relationships and self.
  • Say why your book does the above for you as a woman or women in general.
  • The book can appeal to a male audience too but should have a centrally located message for women or girls.
  • Books can be classics, ficition, nonfiction, poetry compliations but need to meet the above.
  • Remember, we want to make this a list for the essential woman’s library not just a list of 100 great books.

There are a ton of really obvious nominations – like Little Women – but I have this itching feeling that a bunch of not so obvious titles are being left out. For this reason, I send an appeal. What books would you nominate?

  • "Love anything and your heart will be wrung and possibly broken. If you want to make sure of keeping it intact you must give it to no one, not even an animal. Wrap it carefully round with hobbies and little luxuries; avoid all entanglements. Lock it up safe in the casket or coffin of your selfishness. But in that casket, safe, dark, motionless, airless, it will change. It will not be broken; it will become unbreakable, impenetrable, irredeemable. To love is to be vulnerable." — C.S. Lewis
